The certification of organic canteens all around Europe Organic Eprints
Strassner, Carola.
This presentation gives an overview of the legal framework in Europe concerning organic certification of out-of-home operations such as canteens. It contrasts the three ways Member States deal with the situation, namely national law, national recommendations, private standards in the iPOPY countries (Denmark, Italy, Finland, Norway and Germany).

The effect of direct and indirect information on the consumption of organic fruits and vegetables Organic Eprints
Smed, Sinne; Andersen, Laura Mørch.
Based on a unique panel dataset covering consumption of organically and conventionally produced fruits and vegetables in the years 2005 - 2007, we examine whether positive information that link health and consumption of organic fruits and vegetables and negative information about pesticides in conventional fruits and vegetables can change demand for organic foods to such an extent, that it can be used in marketing strategies of organic fruit and vegetables to different types of consumers. Using the double hurdle model we estimate price elasticities and partial effects of these two types of information for six organic segments of Danish households, where three are positively minded towards organic foods and three are either indifferent or negative....

The emergence of diverse organic consumers: Who are they and how do they shape demand? Organic Eprints
Lund, Thomas Bøker; Andersen, Laura Mørch; Jensen, Katherine O’Doherty.
This study uses qualitative and quantitative data as well as household panel data regarding actual purchases of organic food in order to examine organic consumer profiles and recent developments of organic demand in Denmark. Six different segments of Danish households are identified, of which three are either indifferent or negative towards organic foods. Three distinct positively minded segments are also identified. These positively minded segments hold a very high share of all organic food sales on the Danish market and are also driving demand forward. This market can thus be said to be highly polarised. It can also be said to have matured insofar as positively oriented segments that differ in their food involvement, shopping behaviour and levels of...

Understanding cultural dimensions of human/environment relationships is now widely seen as key to effective management, yet characterizing these dimensions remains a challenge. We report on an approach for considering the nonmaterial values associated with ecosystems, i.e., cultural ecosystem services. We applied the approach in Kona, Hawai‘i, using 30 semistructured interviews and 205 in-person surveys, striving to balance pragmatism and depth. We found spirituality, heritage, and identity-related values to be particularly salient, with expression of some of these values varying among respondents by ethnicity and duration of residence in Hawai‘i. Although people of various backgrounds reported strong spirituality and heritage-related...

The influence of cultural identity on willingness to pay values in contingent valuation surveys AgEcon
Awatere, Shaun.
Current New Zealand resource management legislation requires local government actively recognise and take into account Māori values in resource management planning. This means the decision process and participants must interact with evidence based on Māori epistemologies. The Māori world-view is holistic in nature in that it embodies historical, environmental, and spiritual values, as well as modern experiences. Concerns arise for Māori communities when planners and developers utilise economic tools such as willingness to pay surveys to determine the total value of a proposed project. Other concerns are caused by surveys that ask a participant “are you Māori” and fail to recognise the diverse realities that exist for Māori. This paper draws from a survey...

The role of organic entrepreneurship and innovation for poverty alleviation and development Organic Eprints
Hossain, Shaikh Tanveer.
Agricultural production from small farms is currently meeting the food needs of one-third of the world population. Agriculture in Asia is characterized by small holders of farmland with an average size of less than 2 hectares (80% of total farms). These small-scale farmers are challenged by increasing cost of production and decreasing profitability. They cannot afford high input agriculture, such as available chemical solutions for their crops and therefore, by default, most of them are operating as organic farmers but yet they are not fully organic. There is ample opportunity to help these marginal farms become fully organic and in turn profitable enterprises by introducing organic farming practices. To do this there is a need for policies and...

The study of cognition can provide key insights into the social dimension of coupled social-ecological systems. Values are a fundamental aspect of cognition, which have largely been neglected within the social-ecological systems literature. Values represent the deeply held, emotional aspects of people’s cognition and can complement the use of other cognitive constructs, such as knowledge and mental models, which have so far been better represented in this area of study. We provide a review of the different conceptualizations of values that are relevant to the study of human-environment interactions: held, assigned, and relational values. We discuss the important contribution values research can make toward understanding how social-ecological...

Trustworthiness of Organic Produces in Urban Market: Innovation through Quick Response(QR)Code Organic Eprints
Huque, Sheikh Mohammad Rafiul; Hossain, Shaikh Tanveer; Rana, Mohammad Baktiar.
Considering the risks associated with food consumption, several risk reduction strategies are used by consumers, all linked to brand loyalty, store image or label references that build trust in the product. A food product can be labeled organic if it complies with the principles for organic production, processing, labeling and control. Previous researchers have identified that organic certification logo have significant impact on consumption of organic products in urban markets. Organic logo increases trustworthiness of urban consumers about organic produces. Previous studies further observed that high price has deep connotation with trustworthiness about organic produces and urban buyers have ability to pay high price. The urban buyers though they have...

Un sistema di certificazione risk-based per i controlli in agricoltura biologica: un’applicazione tramite Bayesian networks Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; SOLFANELLI, FRANCESCO; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Risk-based inspection system for the organic certification: a bayesian networks approach. The existing method of certification in organic agriculture system, which requires a periodical inspection for all the operators, is inefficient due to the high cost of these controls. A risk based decision support system, that could assist the inspection body during the planning of the annual inspection visits, is advocated to be more cost-effective and efficient. The risk based decision support system is constructed as a Bayesian network; the models incorporate the factors that influence risk of irregularity and analyse their effects by determining probability of non-compliance. Empirical findings using a sample of Italian data on inspection of organic...

Una Rete Bayesiana per migliorare l’efficienza della fase di ispezione del processo di certificazione biologica Organic Eprints
GAMBELLI, DANILO; SOLFANELLI, FRANCESCO.
Organic certification costs represent an important competitive disadvantage for organic farming. A proportion of the higher costs of organic products may result from the costs of certification along the entire supply chain. A reduction of such transaction costs provides a basis for a general increase in organic farms competitiveness. In this paper we present a model based on Bayesian Networks (BN) for the support of certification bodies in the phase of inspection planning. BNs are probabilistic models with a graphical interface, representing a network of a set of interconnected random variables, and provide a basis for influence diagrams based on conditional probabilities computations. The model implements a BN approach using risk factors – such as crop...

Unwrapping the Northern Sea cheese - Enacting the Sea as terroir Organic Eprints
Ostrowski, Kasper.
This paper investigates how a Danish dairy has found an innovative way of making geographical claims by affiliating a regional Danish cheese with the Northern Sea. The Nordic foodscape has, alongside with an increasingly globalized agrifood sector, changed thoroughly over the last decade. Historically, strong geographical claims in relation to food or produce have been less propagated in the Nordic countries, compared to the South. But recently, enactments of quality such as ‘the local’ and the ‘place-specific’ or the ‘endogenous’ and the ‘authentic’ have gained momentum as pivotal notions within the making of markets, not least in Scandinavia. Devoid of well-established traditions for making such geographical claims – new ways of prestige enhancing and...

US National Organic Standards Board: Does It Preserve The Public Voice Amidst USDA and Corporate Interests? Organic Eprints
Dimitri, Carolyn; Bronsing , Christina.
Agriculture in the US has a long history of cooperation between government and industry. Organic standards are no exception to this tradition, and despite the seeming incongruence, the US organic regulation is housed in the very agency that supports large-scale, industrial commodity agriculture. We analyze the composition of the National Organic Standards Board from 1992 - 2012, to assess the degree to which politics and corporate interests have influenced the national organic standard.

Utilising intrinsic robustness in agricultural production systems: Inventions for a sustainable development of agriculture Organic Eprints
Napel, J. ten; Bianchi, F.; Bestman, Monique.
This paper explores the potential of utilising robust crops and livestock for improving sustainability of agriculture. Two approaches for dealing with unwanted fluctuations that may influence agricultural production, such as diseases and pests, are discussed. The prevailing approach, which we call the ‘Control Model’, is to protect crops and livestock from disturbances as much as possible, to regain balance with monitoring and intervention and to look for add-on solutions only. There are a number of problems associated with the Control Model, including reduced animal welfare, environmental pollution and low public support. An alternative approach, which we call the ‘Adaptation Model’, is based on reducing the consequences of disturbances rather than taking...

Visie gezondheid en welzijn biologische landbouwhuisdieren Organic Eprints
Smolders, Gidi; Bestman, Monique; Eijck, Ineke.

Why have basic principles for organic agriculture? … and what kind of principles should they be? Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Kristensen, Erik Steen.
Recently, discussions of basic principles for organic agriculture (and similar ideas) have emerged in several different settings (Benbrook & Kirschenmann 1997, DARCOF 2001, Lund & Röcklinsberg 2001, Verhoog & al. 2003, this issue of Ecology & Farming). In this article we discuss the purposes and functions of such principles and what the principles should look like in order to meet these purposes. We state that there is a need for identifying a few basic principles for organic agriculture, and that the principles must be normative, or ethical, principles on how to act in an organic way, if organic farming is to continue as a distinct alternative to mainstream agriculture. We argue that basic normative principles can help resist unwanted...
